Asian daily IT news site DigiTimes is reporting that Apple is slated to release AirPods 2 sometime in the first half of 2019.
What’s interesting though is that the article also claims that the second-generation AirPods would include, “Health monitoring functions”.
With recent news that Apple’s long-awaited AirPower wireless charging mat is already in mass production, it’s being rumored that the AirPods 2 would be released around the same time as the charging case should feature wireless Qi charging.
Listings for new AirPods were added to the Bluetooth Special Interest Group’s regulatory database late last year with the Bluetooth 5.0 specification. Water resistance would be a welcomed addition, but that likely won’t become a reality until the third-generation of AirPods.
It should be noted that DigiTimes has a mixed track record on reporting Apple rumors that actually come to fruition, so we’re skeptical about the health monitoring feature claim. It’s likely Apple will release second-generation AirPods sometime in Q2 2019.
